Despite advances in surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, cancer remains the second leading cause of death worldwide. The disease is so serious that researchers are always looking for more effective ways to help patients beat it. In the past few years, much of the excitement has centered on immunotherapy treatments that train the body’s own immune system to attack and kill tumor cells.
The most promising of these therapies has been a class of drugs known as chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T). These synthetic “living” drugs are genetically engineered to recognize and attack a specific cancer cell type, and have proved highly successful in treating leukemia and lymphoma.
But what if there was an even simpler way to stimulate the immune system to fight cancer? That’s the question that drew Joe Tippens to a new treatment option.
In 2016, Tippens, a 57-year-old man from Edmond, Oklahoma, was told he had only three months to live. He was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer that had spread to his organs and bones. He got chemo and radiation at MD Anderson, but the tumor returned.
That’s when his veterinarian recommended he take something more unconventional – dog dewormer. The medication, fenbendazole, is used to treat hookworms, roundworms and other gut parasites in animals, mainly dogs. But anecdotal reports suggest it also may have cancer-fighting properties.
